Sagas article Athletic or Sexy? A Comparison of Female Athletes and Fashion Models in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issues explores why some feel that females shouldn’t play physically demanding sports because it is a “turn off” and doesn’t make a female attractive.
Sagas explains how some women are afraid to play sports because potential boyfriends or spouses feel that it is unattractive and their significant other wouldn’t support them. Sagas explained that the possible reasoning behind such an argument is because a good portion males would rather be seen with a model than an athlete. Sagas makes that claim because males often feel weak when being around a female athlete as men are often scared to be beat by females because it could make a male look bad as many assume that men are supposed to be tougher than women. Sagas then goes on to explain that even though a women plays a sport it doesn’t mean that woman is tougher than a male however, she shouldn’t be looked at as different because she plays a sport(s) instead of doing predominantly female things. A unique item his article had is he interviewed various males and asked why potentially being with a female athletic partner can be seen as awkward. Seeing how different males responded is an eye opener because it shows how various women are being discriminated against because their passion is a sport(s). Another aspect I liked about Sagas article is that different sports programs and school athletics have referenced his article with the most notably being the University of Texas endorsing his article and presenting the article to various athletes. Sagas provides useful insight to both male and females thoughts on dating a female athlete. Sagas’ article did an excellent job of exposing a unique issue and shows why female athletes can often be discriminated
