The story Magdalena Looking is a wonderful tale written by Susan Vreeland. The story is enjoyable to read simply because Vreeland was really good at capturing her reader’s attention and setting a bold mood leaving you curious as to where the tale will come to an end. The storyline is led by a 14 year old girl named Magdalena’s perspective, and throughoutthe story you tend to feel and understand where she is coming from.The story took place in a city located on the Schie River in the Netherlands. Magdalena aspired to be just like her father, who is a painter, but was never given the opportunity to. Instead, she would obey her parents’ rules and tend to her chores every day rather than confessing her desires. In the story, she claims “Maybe it was because she wasn’t pretty like Maria.”, referring to the fact that she felt as if her father has always compared her to her sister, and that was the reason he never showed interest in painting her in a picture. This also lowered her self esteem, and made her think even more down on herself. This is setting a more depressing type of Tone, because during the story Magdalena is constantly expressing her thoughts on the way she is treated and her deep desire, and love for her father’s talent.After reading this story you are aware of the point that Vreeland was trying to get across, which is that nobody is able to prove themselves unless given the chance or opportunity.
