Tim Hortons and Starbucks, Canada’s largest coffee chain companies, are misleading customers on their recycling program. CBC Marketplace discovered that Tim Hortons and Starbucks cups placed in recycling are ending up in landfills rather than a recycling plant.
In 2010 Canadians have used approximately 1.5 billion disposable coffee cups, equivalent to more than half a million trees. To test these coffee companies’ recycling program, Marketplace attached tracking devices to disposal cups and dropped them in 14 Tim Hortons and Starbucks locations in Toronto.
