“ Oh Jake.” Brett said, “We could have had such a damned good time together.” (pg 250) It's in this quote that we know that Brett is confused with her life and what she wants and how she wants to live. Brett doesn't really know what she wants based on the fact that she jumps from guy to guy with absolutely no worries. Brett never apologizes for what she puts people through and she doesn’t really care. Throughout the whole story she seems like the happy one, the one who tries to keep a bright eye on everything, but it is apparent by the end of the story that she really isn't. When Brett was first introduced I perceived her as “happy” by they way she talked to people and how Heminway portrayed her. While I was reading in my head I was thinking this woman is very happy and peppy. When she first runs into Jake and his friends she was not shy at all. Brett goes right up to them and says “Hello chaps!” (pg 48) and “How hard is it to get a chap a drink.” She seemed to be happy but also very serious at the same time. That set the mood for Brett. Once the story started going more into depth I noticed that her mood did change from time to time. Like when she is talking to Mike you can tell in the way Hemingway brings her about, the whole mood changes for her character but then she will jump right back into being the peppy and the usual happy Brett. She doesn't know what keeps her happy and she doesn't know what makes her happy. Her mood swings just like any girls does but in a different way. “Lost” does not always technically mean being lost. For Brett and her meaning of being “lost” is that she doesn't know her place in this world and she doesn't know what she needs to keep herself happy. She realizes by the end of the book that there is a lot more to happiness than just being around for a
