In the story Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, the author builds suspense throughout the story. Rudyard Kipling uses different narrative methods and author's craft to create the suspenseful moments. One suspenseful event where authors craft and different narrative methods were used, was when Rikki-Tikki a mongoose, went into the snake hole with Nagaina. Even more bloodcurdling was when Rikki-Tikki met Nag for the first time and avoided an attack from Nag’s wife, Nagaina. One other suspenseful event was when Nag and Rikki were fighting in the bathroom. The author's craft and narrative methods used in the story Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, helped the events be more suspenseful. The author uses description, character reactions, and figurative language to build suspense in the story. “Rikki-Tikki tingled all over with rage and hatred at this.” This description shows that Rikki-Tikki was mad and uses imagery to paint a picture in your head of an angry mongoose fighting the evil snake, Nag, which builds suspense by making the evil image in my head. The way the author describes the event is very vivid and adds to the suspense building slowly in the story. “The character reaction in this moment is when Teddy’s father gets the shotgun and shoots Nag. “The big man had been awakened by the noise and had fired both barrels of a shotgun into Nag just behind the hood.” This shows how the suspense builds by Teddy’s father shooting Nag before he could do any damage to anyone in the house. The author uses imagery to accompany the slowly building suspense. “He was dizzy, aching, and felt shaken to pieces.” This is a metaphor because Rikki-Tikki wasn’t actually shaken to pieces but builds up to when Teddy’s father shoots
