Through “Sweatshop Oppression,” an essay written by Rajeev Ravisankar, the reader gains insight on the truthful and factual reality of oppressive workplace conditions. Ravisankar seeks to appeal to the morals and values of the audience by having relatable content and using the emotion and logic based rhetorical devices “pathos” and “logos.” In the opening paragraph the author connects with the audience by inclusively saying: “being the “poor” college students that we all are, many of us undoubtedly place an emphasis on finding the lowest prices” (). Through revealing he is a student with mutual financial struggles, the audience quickly picks up on his relatable and likeable voice.

The reading selection depicted the behind the scenes activities that actually occurs with the mistreated workers and also the morality of such treatments. Throughout the essay, the reader can assume the writer’s overall objective was to discourage their audience from wearing such attire until their school decides to switch their apparel supplier. The writer also violated a few universal intellectual standards as well as a few logical fallacies.

Kristof, begins to inform readers president Barack Obama is concerned about labor standards in the first sentence; afterward, the author gives descriptive detail on a place named Phnom Penh “The miasma of toxic stink leaves you gasping, breezes batter you with filth, and even the rats look forlorn. Then the smoke parts and you come across a child ambling barefoot, searching for old plastic cups that recyclers will buy for five cents a pound. Many families actually live in shacks on this smoking garbage.”
During the industrial revolution factories flourished and for many people improved their financial status. Factories and machines that could process food faster and in larger quantities caused some jobs to be obsolete. The umemployed migrated from their rural homes along with others immigrateing from other countries in droves flooding urban areas. Most were seeking employment and the ability to provide a better life for their families,.
The Industrial Revolution was a time when factory machines started to boom and replace the hand man labor. The main factory business that started the revolution was the textile companies. They were however many inventions made during the revolution, for example, the sewing machine.
