To be a director is to be in charge: to make choices for a project or idea that will be carried out by others. To be a director is to lead others and to be able to make the decisions required to get the desired product. As a director, Franco Zeffirelli wanted to bring the story of Romeo and Juliet to life by making choices that would allow the audience to visualize the story as he had. Zeffirelli incorporates music, symbolism in colors, and lighting to tell the story of Romeo and Juliet and help the audience to understand the story on a deeper level. In the scene where Romeo and Juliet first meet, the sides are separated as all of the Capulets are dressed in red while all of the Montagues are dressed in a darker blue. The brighter red of the Capulets represents the more hot-headed and aggressive nature of the Capulets, as Tybalt demonstrates, while the darker blue of the Montagues represents their calmer nature, as Benvolio demonstrates. Juliet is also wearing a bright red dress in this scene to show her connection to the Capulets; although, it will later be challenged by her love for Romeo as shown by her wearing mostly white. Different clothes are worn by Mercutio during his battle with Tybalt than that of either side while Romeo wears a blue vest and Tybalt wears a red hat and an orange cape. Mercutio wears all black and white clothes to show that he is not affiliated with either side, and that he is not a part of the schism between the Capulets and the Montagues. After Mercutio is killed, Romeo throws off his blue vest to show that he is abandoning his previously peaceful intentions, demonstrated by the blue color, in favor of attacking Tybalt.
