Recommended: Children's literacy development

Subject integration is a fundamental element that should be incorporated into each content area throughout the school year. Literacy instruction generally ends in the third grade, but the skills generally range from subject to subject and grade to grade. The authors of the text book state, “Think of literacy as a spine; it holds everything together. The branches of learning connect to it, meaning that all core content teachers have a responsibility to teach literacy” (Parkay, et al. 2014, pg. 317). The 7th grade math curriculum includes word-problems, and dialogues which incorporate reading comprehension and literacy. Teachers have adopted many strategies that require technology, and prove to be beneficial for student learning. Since the introduction of technology in school, the way material and even assessments are presented has evolved drastically. Today’s students are way different from in the past, they are much more technologically inclined, and it is a part of their day-to-day life. School leaders should be just as into technology as their students if they want to keep up with the times and keep students engaged. The International Society for Technology in Education developed a number of standards for teachers to use in order to integrate technology into their classrooms. “Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity. Design and develop digital-age learning experiences and assessments. Model digital-age work and learning. Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility. Engage in professional growth and leadership” (Parkay, et al. 2014, pg. 364). Columbia County schools have put an enormous amount of resources into technology in the classroom. The county is working towards having a one for one arrangement, or one piece of technology per student.
