The sexuality education curriculum that I have prepared is, “Taking the Next Step: Sexuality Communication between Parents and Children”. The target audience will be fourth and fifth grade children and their parents. Parents are often unsure on how to have open communication with their child regarding sexuality. Other parents may just need some extra skills to help strengthen the sexuality communication they have already started with their children. It is particularly important for the fourth/fifth grade age group to get accurate information and know that they can discuss sexuality with their parents. This is due to the physically development stage this age group in entering. Furthermore, Advocates for Youth (n.d.) reports that when children learn open, honest, and direct communication regarding sexuality, later in life it can help them make responsible and healthy sexual choices. The curriculum classes will take place at the local elementary school as an after-school program. The curriculum class will only be available to the families who have children at each individual school. This will allow for a smaller and more personal group setting. SIECUS states that there is significant data that shows sexuality education programs are successful. There is also support for these programs from multiple areas such as medical groups, public health organizations, and parents. Unfortunately, there is no federal funding specifically dedicated to comprehensive sexuality education programs. This has resulted in young people that did not receive sexuality education. This information is critical in helping young people make healthy life choices, have positive relationships, postpone sexual activity, protect themselves from STD’s, and unintended pregnancy.
