The first story to be summarized is, “A Tale of Two Cities”. In this story it is 1775 in the French countryside where the poor country people are being taxed outrageously. As our novel starts, a very businessman-like British man makes his way into Paris. He’s on a very troubling mission, it’s almost enough to make a businessman cry. Eighteen years ago, a French doctor was imprisoned without any warning, or undergoing a trial. He’s been locked up in the worst prison, the Bastille. After nearly two decades, he was released – again without any explanation – and he’s began staying with an old servant, Ernst Defarge. Today, Mr. Lorry, the British businessman is on a mission to take the French doctor, Dr. Manette back to England, where he can live in peace with his daughter. Fortunately for Dr. Manette he has the World’s Perfect Daughter. Lucie, the child he left eighteen years ago, is now a grown-up, smiling, blond, perfect ray of sunshine. She’ll need every ounce of that perfection to restore her father back to health. Of course, she does manage to bring Dr. Manette back into the everyday world within the space of five years Dr. Manette is a new man. His clerk, Bob Cratchit, is sitting at the desk in Scrooge’s counting house. Scrooge's nephew, Fred visits his uncle and invites him to his annual Christmas party.
