Love is an emotion that all humans are capable of feeling if they find their corresponding match, but love can either be devoted or broken. Shakespeare showed how his belief in love is true once there is a happy ending. During his time, “romantic” was not based on love at first sight but based on the happy ending. Taming of the Shrew was based in Padua, a city in Italy prominent during the Renaissance. Petruchio and Kate represent Shakespeare’s definition of true love, while Lucentio and Bianca delineate Shakespeare’s emotions on how love at first sight is rare. Petruchio and Kate portray Shakespeare’s passion for love. Shakespeare puts forward his feelings toward love and how it can be treated in distinctive ways. Shakespeare’s definition of love is revolved around the idea that a happy ending is devoted love. The word “romantic” is seen much different than it was during the Renaissance. Hortensio and the Widow are married for the money, Lucentio and Bianca represent love at first sight, and Petruchio and Kate were married for the happy ending. Hortensio failed miserably had winning Bianca’s heart, so he went against his own word and married an old widow to at least gain a profit for himself. Lucentio saw a single glance of Bianca and instantly fell in love with her petarchian looks. He was so desperate for her, he disguised himself as a language teacher to win her heart. On the other hand, Petruchio married Kate to tame her nasty ways to gain happiness. Petruchio is a very arrogant man. So he did whatever it took to prove people wrong. The quote “He that knows better how to tame a shrew.” (4.2.152) was stated by Petruchio expressing how he who is best can tame any shrew. Altogether, every match represented the three different type of love that existed in this time
