I have had the pleasure of knowing Gurleen Sahansra since she began at Forest Hills High School at the beginning of her sophomore year. Being a new student can be a difficult adjustment for some students, but Gurleen never faltered in her academics. Her organizational skills, persistence in times of struggle, and intelligence were only some of her wonderful attributes that helped her along the way. Those same attributes were also helpful in her selection to be a member of our Health Professions program and National Honor Society chapter. Gurleen is a sweet and quiet young lady with a wonderful sense of self and maturity.
The use of children in the Sierra Leone Civil War was widespread, with up to 10,000 children taking part in the conflict and up to eighty percent of RUF forces between the ages of seven and fourteen. Ishmael is one of these children. In his memoir, A Long Way Gone, Lieutenant Jabati and his men exploit several techniques to transform these frightened children into ruthless killing machines. They do this through the use of drugs, pop culture, as well as character and emotional manipulation. Tactics like these create habits and addictions that are almost impossible to break.

Rikki-Tikki is the name of the character I will be analysing from the short story called “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi”. The author’s name is Joseph Rudyard Kipling. He said, “[Books] were among the most important affairs in the world…. I had found out, too, that one could take a pen and set down what one thought and that nobody accused one of ‘showing off’ by doing so” (29). He made Rikki-Tikki a brave, curious, and valiant character that played the role of a hero by saving the garden and his new family from terrorizing king cobras.
Could you imagine being a child soldier when you were 13 years old? Growing up with guns, blood, and constant murder? Ishmael Beah was a victim of those things; his childhood taken away from him and having grown up in what we would call total chaos. He grew up from ages 13 to 16 fighting for what he believed to be the good guys of the civil war. Beah was taught to kill the enemies by shooting, burying them alive, and cutting their throats.
Even though Mawi’s life was hard for much of his life, he managed to make the most of his situation and learn as much as he could from school, his family, his mistakes, and his hardships and eventually get to Harvard. One of the first things he learned when he came to America was to treat everyone like angels, even the “lowliest of beetles: beggars, vagrants, and misfits”(Pg 29). “People always mistreated the angels, my father said because they never looked like angels”(Pg 29). Along with this Mawi’s parents “Hammered into our minds the importance of excelling in school”(Pg 33). Twolde’s tragic death at first caused Mawi to mourn, but later this event ends up making Mawi remember him fondly and want to be like him.
Baba speaks these words to Rahim Khan when they are having a conversation about Amir at the end of Chapter 3, and this quotation begins to reveal significant traits in both Baba and Amir. With these words Baba begins to sum up one of Amir’s crucial character flaws which is his lack of bravery, in other words cowardice, and Baba continues to reveal how much value he places in standing up for what is right. We see this later on in the book when Baba and Amir are fleeing Kabul and Baba stands up to the young Russian soldier that was attempting to rape the young Afghan woman. Baba is shown to be unenthusiastic to praise Amir, primarily because he feels Amir is absent of the courage to even stand up for himself, leaving Amir continuously yearning

Soraya and General Taheri have a relationship proving that an imbalance of power is unhealthy. When Soraya runs off with an Afghan man at age eighteen, General Taheri appears within a month with a gun in hand threatening to kill the man and then himself (Hosseini 179). Through this act he asserts his power and control over Soraya’s life, which causes Soraya to loathe her father. General Taheri’s dominance also causes him to seem embarrassed of Soraya and he is quick to change the subject when his daughter is brought up in conversation (Hosseini 141). General Taheri does not hide his disappointment in Soraya for not conforming to Afghan standards and tries to control her decisions.
Baba and Amir's foil is shown throughout the novel, but you can already identify many differences at the beginning of the book when they lived in Kabul. Although, they also do have a few similarities. They are similar because they are father and son and share similar characterises. Baba and Amir both grew up wealthy as they are Pashtuns. Amir and Baba both hold hard secrets and live their life filled with guilt.
Everyday, she excels in her job of caring for the children and making a difference in the community. Due to her kindness she would always bring thoughtful gifts for the children. Where the Wild Things are by Maurice Sendak is an interesting children’s picture book. The main character is a little boy named Max, who has a wild imagination. He uses all five senses as well as thought and his actions to express his personality as well as how he reacts and interacts with his surroundings. Max’s id, ego and super-ego are greatly shown in this book through the way that the author has portrayed him. Not only is this book a children’s story, but it can also be perceived as a life lesson.
“Two Kinds,” by Amy Tan, essentially revolves around the struggle of Jing Mei and her constant conflict with her mother. Jing Mei’s mom watches TV shows such as the Ed Sullivan Show, which gives her inspiration that her daughter should be like the people and actors.
