Target vs Walmart is an epic battle between to giant service and retail companies that has been going on for over forty years. What exactly are discounters? Discount stores which offer products at a lower price compared too many retail stores. Due to efficient distribution methods, discount stores are able to lower their prices. Walmart and Target are both discounters. In times of economic recession, both focus solely on lowering prices. Target emphasizes on the “Pay less” instead of the “expect more”. Walmart guarantees lowest prices. However, they target different customers. A study shows that Walmart’s customers’ average household income ranges about 30-60k a year. This will be a tremendous improvement to the traditional method of manually taking inventories at different store locations. Target needs to require its suppliers to install a tag on every product that they supply to its stores. This tag will have a microchip that contains pertinent product information. Then, Target will install machines at strategic places in its stores and warehouses. These machines will continually scan products as they are brought into Target stores, shelved, and as they exit the stores after being purchased by customers. By reading the RFID signals on each product, information is collected and entered on a database on a continuous basis. This information can be automatically transmitted to suppliers. Thus, allowing both Target and its suppliers to efficiently track inventories. For instance, the RFID system easily provides information regarding how long an item has been in stock. This is particularly advantageous when dealing with perishable food items or other products that expire at a certain date.
