I believe that teaching is the most rewarding profession in the world. Teachers have a unique opportunity to positively impact an individual’s life each day.

My passion for teaching was ignited within me during secondary school when I began to appreciate the passion and determination my teachers had, and the lengths they would go to ensure my success. This experience had a profound impact on me and manifested a desire to provide this positive experience for others.

The reason I wish to teach Religious education is the fact it allows pupils to critically engage with the ‘big issues’ of life and allows individuals to draw from personal experience. During my time, here I experienced the day-to-day roles of a teacher such as lesson planning, practical approaches to teaching, classroom management and insight into the pastoral roles of a teacher.

On one occasion, I was involved in leading a reading group which contained pupils whose first language was not English. This experience in particular, allowed me to develop my verbal and non-verbal communication skills, as I often had to act out and substitute the children’s names in the narrative in order to maintain their attention, and ensure a successful learning environment. This illustrated the need to be creative and adaptive in the classroom to meet individual needs.

Furthermore, as a Sunday school teacher within my local church, I am involved with young people between the ages of 5-13. This experience has demonstrated the importance of having a good rapport with pupils and has given me insight into dealing with challenging behaviour and has provided effective strategies to control such behaviours such as; countdowns, positive discipline and goal setting.
