Every day many of us are faced with the question, “Should I step in and help?”. Some of us immediately think yes and jump in to help, while others believe it is better to keep walking. The bystander effect happens when a person does not stop and help because they think someone else will. In these situations, some people stand up and respond to the crisis, because they are not worried about what will happen to them, but what will happen to the person in crisis instead. In the novel Night and the poem “The Hangman”, the bystander effect took place because people were afraid to bring attention to themselves.
I am writing this Rhetorical Reflection Memo to reflect on my experiences, readings, and works and examine how my skills have developed from past to present and how to further improve them in the future. Over the course of the term there have been four papers (this being the fifth) that have made me aware of both my strengths and weaknesses in writing: “Rhetorical Analysis”, “Analytic Summary”, “Literacy Narrative”, and “Summary Response”. I struggled the most writing the “Summary Response”, and had the most ease writing the “Literacy Narrative”, but with each paper I experienced some kind of difficulty that helped me learn about my own capabilities. I was most challenged by the “Summary Response”, but my difficulties with writing the paper
Coming into RCC 200 in August, I felt confident as a writer in my ability to articulate my thoughts into a well-developed essay. However as with any student, I knew that I had plenty of room to improve, most notably in regards to formulating a strong thesis, descriptive body, and well-summarized conclusion, and was fortunate to have countless sources to guide me throughout the semester. At the conclusion of two months of practice, I have learned several new techniques of how to properly convey my writing across various forms of papers, which is best exemplified when comparing my annotated bibliography to my i-search paper. What was most challenging about my annotated bibliography was my lack of ability to apply college level strategies across several aspects of my paper. In hindsight, it is understandable as to how I was unable to express myself in a more coherent manor as I was not yet introduced to tools such as our class book They Say I Say, assistance from tutors at the writing center, or valuable expertise from college professors.
This semester was filled with many bumpy roads. I struggled in the beginning of the semester with my writings , as I didn 't feel confident enough to write a well developed writing. I seemed to find myself struggling whereas writing was not my favorable subject. The major errors I had in my writings this semester would be , grammatical errors,work citations, transition words, formatting ,paragraph development, sentence structure , and sentence level issue. Therefore I have set goals to improve my writing in the future.
In chapters 22 and 23, I learned about the mistakes writers have in regards to sentence structure and wording. An idea that was emphasized immensely throughout these two chapters was that a writer should never repeat their ideas since it adds unnecessary information (CITE). This information was really important for me to learn since I have the tendency to repeat ideas or phrases due to the fact that I either forget that I had already wrote about them or because I feel my thesis needs to be emphasized more. As a result, I will thoroughly review my essays to make sure I remove any redundant information. In this short passage by William Zinsser, Zinsser used compare and contrast to inform the readers about his personal opinions of being a writer. Due to different understandings and opinions on how to be a good writer, Zinsser decided to use compare and contrast in order to present a clean and detailed differences to the reader about how different people’s writing style can vary. By doing this, it would be extremely helpful for the readers to distinguish the differences of each writing style, see the benefits and disadvantages, and ultimately gather enough information to decide which style fits them the best. At the panel with Dr. Brock, Zinsser gave the audience a broader view of different writing styles and how they contribute differently.
To deliver an effective message, I must first analyze the situation; gather information, choose a medium, organize the information. Next, when I’m ready to write the message I have to adapt to my audience and their needs. Last, to complete message, I have to revise, produce, proofread, then distribute the message. (p. 92) The Three-Step writing process should be used when composing any message to ensure that all messages are effective and concise.

In my previous grades, my teachers always focused on grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary words, but they never once taught the students how to write an essay. School was difficult for me because of this. One teacher specifically, Mrs. White, helped me learn everything I know about writing essays in my seventh grade year of junior high school. After having her class, I feel significantly more confident about writing and I have her to thank for that. Being in the seventh grade and not knowing how to write was a big deal for me, I was embarrassed.
This semester, I am enrolled in Professional Media Writing, and my goals are to grow in my ability to clearly describe a scenario, as well as expand my vocabulary. Although I have written many papers in my academic career, I struggle with revising my writing. In general, I think that the voice and clarity in my text is fair, but I lack descriptions. Through this class I hope to identify points of strength and weakness in my writing. At Northwest, I am a student leader for a campus ministry called the Navigators.
Before taking writing skills two I 've had a positive mindset towards writing because I see it as a way to express my thoughts. For example, whenever I feel a bit melancholy writing a short story or just free writing always makes me feel a bit better. On the other hand, I don’t believe I’m the best writer because like every other student I make mistakes in my writing. Although, I don’t take the editing negatively I always look back at my past essay and try to reflect on them to see how I can always improve my writing skills. Overall, I have a pretty good mindset towards writing even though I have my mistakes I know if I study harder I can become a better writer over time.
Writing has always been an issue but yet interesting subject of mine. As hard as I try and write essays, and papers I just can’t get the hang of writing. But after taking this class, I did learn different writing technique and improved my writing proficiency, material body of formatting, and how to uncovering and properly use sources. Through class exams, essays, and a research paper, I was able to learn new writing skills. Although I have learned a variety of things, my writing still needs improvement.
Each essay I wrote took me several time to write, several drafts which show that I have improve every time I do the drafts to write a perfect masterpiece. I learned a lot of skills and techniques this quarter, which has helped me to improve and progress my writing skills for the future. I will remember the skills, techniques, and tips that professor gave us in this English class for my higher education. For example, all the time that I went to visit professor Sapozhnikov office hours to receive help on my out-of -class essays has helped me to improve, grow, and progress in my writing skills as a writer. Some of the significant changes I have made as I was progressing and growing were to develop a strong thesis to help support my claims as I write my essays, such as facts, observations, illustration, and examples.
The method of research, citing facts, and brainstorming ideas was very intense in this class. Reading various arguments debating the topic I want to write on, was very challenging and time consuming. In this reflection essay I want to show how researching process was vital on changing my writing style. Also, what I’ve learned in English 105 class after a great summer semester with lots of material to learn from. Researching was drastically important, making every paper I made heavily based on research.
Author E.M. Forster once said, “How do I know what I think until I see what I say?”(Forster). Academic writing has the ability to reveal the students inscribed thoughts and opinions in ways that may surprise even them. The better get at writing analytically, the easier it is for them to apply those skills to other aspects of their life. People who write in journals often find it a useful form of exploring self-awareness (Ribeiro 2015). By writing down student ideas and perspectives in essays, even in non-academic disciplines, they hone their own expression skills, identify patterns, observed events and consider possible solutions.
