World War I was seen and understood as a truly modern war for many reasons including the transformation of technology , new weapons, industrialization, the creation of mass societies and nationalism. In addition, it was the first war with effective Automatic weapons , first war where chemical gas agents were used , first war that involved so many nations around the world, first war with planes as well as tanks. During World War I, countries used technology to help them become stronger and more powerful against enemies. The Industrial Revolution allowed new technologies to make new weapons and upgrades for old weapons making them more deadly and more powerful

Before, war leaders obeyed the general rule, which was that soldiers should only attack soldiers and military institutions. That all changed when Germany decided to bomb cities and target civilians in hopes of demoralizing Britain. After that war leaders saw that it was acceptable to do such things. In 1916, The battle of Verdun was fought. The US finally entered the war in 1917. In 1918 the last German offensive occurred, as well as the second battle of the Marne, the allied counteroffensive, and the armistice between Allies and Germany.
