And there will be more of your children dead tomorrow" said Ted Bundy, one of the most notorious criminals of the late 20th century. Having killed up to a hundred individuals, America’s most prolific murderer represents the epitome of a serial killer. Being one of the most extreme forms of criminality, The mind of a serial killer has always fascinated the public. With Tv shows such as Quantico, Lie to Me, Criminal Minds, and Sherlock skyrocketing in views, A strong sense of curiosity for the inner working of profiling has emerged in the masses. He began his research into face-reading in the 1950s, at the University of Chicago. He wanted to know whether it would be possible to catalogue each different expression the human face is capable of making, and whether he could use that information to read other people's emotions more accurately.In the 1970s, after years spent dissecting the smallest muscular twitches, Ekman had amassed a list of more than 3,000 different expressions. He later used his research to create a training programme using what he calls the Facial Action Coding System, which teaches anyone to spot these facial anomalies, revealing how to pick up on the smallest of movements. He has worked with the FBI and the CIA, among others, as well as with the animation studio DreamWorks to produce lifelike expressions for animated film characters. Paul Ekman is vital in any discussion concerning microexpression and thus come my first cultural text. Lie to Me is an American crime drama television series that follows Dr. Cal Lightman and his colleagues in The Lightman Group accepting assignments from third parties (commonly local and federal law enforcement), and assist in investigations, reaching the truth through applied psychology: interpreting microexpressions, through the Facial Action Coding System, and body language. He shakes his head at the right times and holds his body in the right positions to convey an innoncetn man. Look at how he leans forward and uses firm head movements when he's talking about how the police have the wrong man. He did go to law school, so he likely did have some training in how to manipulate people. He laughs at the right times, smiles, and rubs his chin. It's nearly impossible to imagine he was capable of such horrific crimes, and his body language is why. But he has one big downfall. There is a huge disconnect between how someone would normally be acting in this situation and how he is acting. He's been arrested as a murder suspect and is being interviewed about it, but doesn't show the slightest bit of anxiety or stress (except a small amount when he's questioned about whether or not he gets any fresh air, since by many accounts Bundy was extremely uncomfortable about being locked up). He can't seem to feel that pressure that you or I might feel. He's acting way too innocent. If he had acted nervous, he would have looked more suspicious, and he knew it.
