Everyday television, film, advertisement and music industries deliver contradicting messages to young girls around the world, especially in well technology developed nations like US. They create mayhem and confusion among adolescents, who are trying to find themselves, fit in and safely pass into womanhood stage. At home and school girls are being taught how important it is to obtain education, career, learn responsibilities as well as how to become great mothers and wives, take care of the house and act like ladies. Countless companies like Calvin Klein, Gucci, Bebe, H&M, Forever 21, Hollister and many other brand names try to sell their products using young, beautiful, skinny models with long legs, perfect hair and make-up. Average girl starts to compare herself to beauty standards she can never achieve and tries to come as close as possible by purchasing all these items or what’s worse starves herself to lose weight. This madness doesn’t end on money spent on clothing, make-up and gadgets, eating disorders or low self-esteem. Girls at age of 18 decide to get a nose surgery, breast augmentation or lip injections, while their bodies are still changing. According to National Institute on Media and the Family “study reports that at age thirteen, 53% of American girls are unhappy with their bodies. This grows to 78% by the time girls reach seventeen”. At the same time fast food restaurants present at every mall or street corner, make millions of dollars selling cheap, low quality meals packed with sodium and fat, leading to obesity and skin problems. In addition, most adolescents strive to fit in, find friends, have an interesting social life and receive approval from society. Miley started as a Disney Channel star Hannah Montanna, but eventually decided to bury this character and “grow up”. Middle finger, smoking marijuana, outfits that reveal more than they cover, props shaped as human genitals used during concerts are what now describes her new image. Her recent behavior had been criticized by many, but in her defense, she claims, that nobody can tell her what to do and how to express herself. Janette Verdnik in Daily Mail states “With all the power, money and influence that she has, she could help to a better world. But her main essence is to twerk and to appear naked in her videos.” She also claims singers no longer sell just music, but also their bodies and sex, due to audience listening with their ears and eyes. Miley was an inspiration, a role model for the vast majority of young girls and she shouldn’t promote bad morals to earn money and get attention. Cyrus is not the only controversial celebrity loved by young fans around the world. Rihanna (Robyn Rihanna Fenty) creates explicit music with its references to drugs, sex, and violence and posts plenty of her naked pictures on which one she uses drugs and drinks alcohol.
