Power is the ability or capacity to do something or act in a particular way, Power is not only strength it is a human relationships, power is the authority one person holds over another. In the play The Crucible,written by Arthur Miller. Three characters Abigail Williams, Reverend Hale, and Judge Danforth. All want to gain power as the play goes on. But it takes a turn and influenced them negatively.
Power can be related to many aspects of daily life. It is the main variable in which makes and runs a stable government and community. Without an obvious or well known source of stable power, there is chaos, dysfunction, and disorganization. A good example of mislead power is within the novel The Moon is Down by John Steinbeck who explains suppressing acts by a know government of its own people leading to rebellion, manipulation, and controlling acts against the government. The people face an oppressor which is trying to take away the freedom of a democratic government, causing the people to rebel.
Abraham Lincoln once said, “nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” Power changes the way people act. Power has a negative effect on others because King Creon became a bad king and Hitler used it to lie and kill people. Power had a negative effect because Creon became a bad king. Creon won’t let Antigone bury her own brother.
Power can not only be seen as literal oppression and tension between humans or characters, but also can be seen as perceived control where a tradition or belief
Power is the ability to actor do something in a particular way. People who have too much power and abuse it, and turn their power into a negative power. Fear and tyranny are abused by people with power creating a negative effect on society. Leaders with a huge rule of power will abuse their role as a leader by creating a fearful environment.
The Power Effect Power affects many people and the outcomes of life. Power is a way of controlling people or events. In the play, Tragedy of Julius Caesar, written by William Shakespeare, power causes jealousy that destroys friendships and alliances. Julius Caesar is offered to rule Rome which makes other powerful people jealous. Cassius is jealous and tries to manipulate Brutus into assassinating Caesar.
Everyone, at one point in their lives has wanted power more than anything. Those who do get it have to make the decision whether they want to use it for good or evil. Power can turn a person into something they never dreamed they would become because it starts to take over their lives and people do not know what to do with so much power. There are many examples of power in the play Macbeth and every person that got it used it in very different ways. This caused many changes in people from turning from good to evil or evil to good.
Power can be determined as dominance over something or someone. Having power is an important factor in life. Once power is established, it can become good or bad. Power is often abused and used to manipulate others. Killing Chickens by Meredith Hall and Lincolnites by Ron Rash both display the theme of power.
The Shakespearean play, The Tempest, examined the troubles in obtaining nature’s true power. Once Prospero obtained it, he almost immediately got rid of it. He took advantage of his servants to gain his power, yet decides to throw away his own individual power… his knowledge. Prospero is left with only his dukedom and even less than what he had those 12 years ago. Shakespeare could have intended to mean that power is strong, and only will the power mean anything to you if you’ve earned it the right way.
