Power can be related to many aspects of daily life. It is the main variable in which makes and runs a stable government and community. Without an obvious or well known source of stable power, there is chaos, dysfunction, and disorganization. A good example of mislead power is within the novel The Moon is Down by John Steinbeck who explains suppressing acts by a know government of its own people leading to rebellion, manipulation, and controlling acts against the government. The people face an oppressor which is trying to take away the freedom of a democratic government, causing the people to rebel. The invaders take over a town in a short amount of time; proving that they are very efficient and will not be overthrown very easily. The townspeople are angry about this, because the invaders force them to complete tasks against their own will. A townsperson, Alex, is force to work in the mines for the invaders. He is treated poorly in the mines and is very angry at the invaders. For example, “He shouted something about being a free man. When I ordered him to work, he rushed at me with his pick,” (Steinbeck 37). Alex killed the soldier Benetick with his pickaxe, which was the first deadly assault against the invaders. After Alex’s trial, the invaders ration food and state that that they will shoot anyone who resits. The invaders react this way because of fear of the townspeople. Steinbeck states, “Thus it came about that the conquerors grew afraid of the conquered and their nerves wore thin and they shot at shadows in the night,” (Steinbeck 59). Due to the fact that the people are acting aggressively towards the invaders, the people cause fear within the invaders. The townspeople use this fear to control and manipulate
