Servant leadership is a style of leadership that emphasizes empathy, communication, and commitment. Regent University describes ten characteristics of a servant leader as listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of people, and building community. In addition, servant leadership is an approach that prioritizes serving others before oneself. It focuses on many different aspects that contribute to the main goal of servant leadership which is to serve others. In many of the articles I found while researching, servant leadership is an abundance of qualities and characteristics that further the style of leadership.

Reverting back to the ten characteristics of servant leadership, a leader must be committed to the growth of the people, or their followers. Regent University expresses that “Servant leaders believe that people have an intrinsic value beyond their tangible contributions as workers. As such, the servant leader is deeply committed to the growth of each and every individual within his or her organization.” This quote is very powerful because a leader must be willing to take on the responsibility of making sacrifices for their followers even if it does not comply with their own personal interests. This selflessness helps to build a sense of community and belonging within the group. Another representation of selflessness within servant leadership is general awareness and self-awareness. Regent University adds that “Awareness helps one in understanding issues involving ethics, power, and values. There is also leadership character which is the center of leadership. The four principles of leadership character according to Organizational Talent Consulting are integrity, responsibility, forgiveness, and compassion. These principles are closely related to the characteristics of servant leadership. Before the principles listed, the article gave a brief overview of values and character that read “Decisions between right and wrong often are made based on values, worldview, and past experiences. Leadership character determines how competencies are applied, and it shapes how decisions are implemented.” The Ivey Business journal addresses values in greater detail.
