Terry Fox is known to be a hero and a great leader worldwide. Terry Fox was born on July 28th, 1958 in Winnipeg, Manitoba but moved to Surrey, British Columbia in 1966 but ended up settling in Port Coquitlam in 1968. Fox was just an ordinary Canadian boy who loved sports like soccer, rugby, baseball and most of all, basketball. When he was in grade 8, he wanted to try out for the basketball team whilst only being 5’0 and there were many people better than him but he was still determined to join the team. He joined the team ended up being the last substitute but he was still grateful to be on the team. Fox also started getting into cross country running. He then started feeling this pain in his knee in December but decided to ignore it for his basketball. But by March, the pain had gotten even worse and Fox finally went to the hospital to find out he has a type of cancer named “osteosarcoma” that started on the knee. He ended up taking chemotherapy in amidst 50% chance of survival. Terry had to get an amputation for his left leg and was received a prosthetic leg or else the cancer would spread. The night before his cancer surgery, someone handed him an article about a cancer patient with a prosthetic leg who completed the “New York City Marathon”. This inspired Terry so he did a 14-month preparation training program to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research which we now today call the “Marathon of Hope”. On October 15th, 1979, he sent a letter to the Canadian Cancer Society where he announced his goal and funding. He promised to complete his run even if he had to “crawl every last mile”. The Marathon had finally begun on April 12th, 1980, when Fox dipped his right leg in the Atlantic Ocean near St. Johns, Newfoundland and filled two large water bottles with ocean water.
