Texas’s Struggle for the South

Texas seceded from the United States on March 2, 1861 so that they could protect, preserve and defend their beliefs. The Union was starting to deteriorate in 1820 when Missouri was admitted into the Union as a slave state, therefore creating the missouri Compromise. In the compromise it stated that to try and balance Missouri as a slave state they would admit Maine as a free state. Many find themselves wondering why Texas may have fought in the Civil War. Texas fought for the Confederacy because of love, states rights, and slavery. Many people in Texas were born and raised in Texas. In result of that they grew love for Texas. Not only did they fight for the love of Texas, but they also fought for the love of their families. For example; John Rabb stated that he would only marry in Texas as well as telling Virge to “only enlist for Texas service” rather than any other state in the Confederacy (Doc D P1&P3). Rabb constantly told his family to “do the best you can”, and the fact that he was uneasy about them (Doc D P2). States rights are simply the belief that “no state can force another state either to remain in it or withdraw from it.” (Doc C P1) They believed that they had “not only the right of self government” but the right to have a “government as an association of sovereignties, and not a blended mass of people in one social compact” (Doc C P2). Many believed in states rights, although there were some others who didn’t. For example, Abraham Lincoln directly stated “No state upon its own mere motion, can lawfully get out of the Union” in document C paragraph 3.
