Text Connections The poem, Annabel Lee by Edgar Alan Poe is similar to William Shakespeare’s famous play, Romeo and Juliet. Both pieces of literature discuss young love and how death tears them apart. A “wind blew out of a cloud“ and killed Annabel, leaving the narrator in despair (15). This is similar in Romeo and Juliet, where Juliet stabs herself exclaiming “O happy dagger, / This is thy sheath” (5.3.171). The narrator, Romeo, and Juliet all reminisce about their love’s passing. Death plays a significant role in both pieces where death represents conflict. Young love is another text connection with the poem and the play. In Annabel Lee, Poe emphasizes that the narrator “was a child and she was a child, / In this kingdom by the sea, / But …show more content…
The narrator in the poem loved Annabel since he was a child, similar to Romeo and Juliet being irrational teenagers in love. Not only have that, outside factors ruined their happiness. Envious angles in “Annabel Lee” and the family rivalry between the Capulets and Montagues in “Romeo and Juliet” ruin their time with their significant other. The poem also relates to a personal connection of mine. The narrator and I share this common love for someone special since we were children. I had loved my dog, Scout so much since I was a child. We were practically best friends, doing pretty much everything together. Around the summer of 7th grade, Scout began to act differently. He wasn't eating, sleeping, and being his playful self. He was always lying down and always refused to eat. We finally took him to vet and found out that he had a brain tumor. My family and I were devastated and we cherished his final days. Unfortunately, Scout’s final day arrived leaving me heartbroken, even till this day. This correlates with Annabel’s death caused by “the wind” leaving the narrator in a great depression. Death is an unfortunate situation that the narrator and I share. Lastly, “Annabel Lee” connects to our everyday world by the holiday Dia de Los Muertos
