Introduction: I am going to discuss with you why I believe the case against Adnan Syed for the murder and kidnapping of Hae Min Lee should be reopened within the court. I have reasoning behind Asia McClain and her proposed alibi for Adnan and with a DNA test found linking a former serial killer/rapist, Ronald Lee Moore. I will be discussing the credibility behind Asia's letters and affidavits and how Adnan is innocent and should have a fair trial. I will also discuss why I believe Jay's statements on the day do not all match up as he tells different stories.
Out of all of the witnesses and all of the facts, the only hard evidence the prosecution had was Jay Wilds’ testimony and Adnan’s own cell phone records. Without the records, the jury must simply decide who is more credible- Jay or Asia. In fact, in a 2015 interview with The Intercept, prosecutor Kevin Urick admits that either Jay’s testimony or the cell phone evidence by itself would not be enough to prove Adnan’s guilt. Therefore, the state needs both of them to put Adnan away. But honestly, the state has neither comfortably.
The Case of Adnan Syed She was killed over a breakup. On March 13, 1999, Hae Min Lee was murdered and buried in a shallow grave at Linkin Park. She was a popular kid at Woodlawn High School, who played lacrosse and had lots of friends.
There was not enough evidence to prove if Adnan was innocent or guilty. There were multiple people that said that Jay had Adnan’s phone but Adnan called Jay at least twice which means that Adnan would have had to use a payphone or borrow a phone. And supposedly Adnan was sitting in the best buy parking lot when he called Jay. Also in the time it took
Jay's story does line up with one of the pings but not the rest, causing it to be insufficient in helping the case further convict Adnan. Including that evidence, Adans most credible Alibi, Asian Mclain, never testified at Syed's trial. Asain Mclaine wrote an affidavit and claims to have seen and interacted with Adnan Syed the day Hae Min Lee disappeared, between 2:15-3:15 pm. That time frame is the supposed time Hae Min Lee is supposed to be dead. Sarah Koenig explains in Episode 1, "Asia wrote out an affidavit on the spot.
Adnan Syed is innocent because Jay’s version of the story constantly changes, the timeline of the murder isn’t possible, and the cell phone records are not feasible. Jay’s version of events constantly changes and is not reliable. In his first interview, he tells police he first saw Hae’s body at the strip mall in Edmondson. However, in his second interview, he states he
The person giving the police all the facts about what Adnan did was Jay Adnan’s friend that helped him kill Hae, but did anyone take the possibility that Jay may have killed Hae by himself and just said that Adnan did it and he was the helper. Jay could have set the hole thing up because when Jay was interviewed by the cops in the 1st interview he said that they
Their only evidence was Jay's testimony against Adnan. Jay also could not keep his story straight. In addition to that, in a murder trial there should not be a reasonable doubt if someone is found guilty. Asia’s letter helped Adnan’s case on where he was and who he was with. When Adnan could not have any visitors, Asia wrote him a letter trying to help his case.
Sarah states, “ If I’m Adnan and I need to be seen for track, I’m freaking out right now, that I need to get back for track to have an alibi.” “But, it is possible. Or at least not impossible, which was what Adnan was saying in that first letter.” These quotes explain Adnan is innocent because if he had killed Hae before Jay said they went to the park to smoke weed, why would Adnan want to go far from school if he knew he had a track practice to go to? The route Jay was explaining could have been possible, but everything had to have been the right time and right movements to prove it.
Adnan can’t be considered guilty if there isn’t enough evidence present for a jury to make such as life changing decision. The only evidence used in this case was one testimony and the defendant’s phone records. The testimony was made by Jay Wilds who was with Adnan during the time of Hae’s disappearance. He stated that Adnan planned everything ahead of time and asked him to help after her death. Jay admitted to helping with the disposal of the body, but he’s testimony doesn’t sound trustworthy.
Did you know that a man named Adnan Syed has been in jail for over fifteen years, for the murder of a woman named Hae Min Lee, and several friends and family members are still fighting for him to be released out of jail? In 1999 a seventeen year old boy, Adnan Syed, was convicted for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee. Hae’s body was found in Leakin Park; a place where many people are found dead and bodies are usually disposed there. This case had no physical or DNA evidence, just testimonies. Even after fifteen years of being in jail, Adnan still claims he is innocent.
The evidence, though, doesn’t support that conviction; there wasn’t enough concrete evidence to unquestionably prove his guilt. Adnan Syed was unfairly convicted of the murder of Hae Min Lee. Through his trial, the prosecution did not present sufficient evidence to fully
If you were charged for a murder you did not commit, what would you do? Adnan Syed was sentenced to prison after he was found guilty of murdering his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee. But there are a few small details that make significant complications within the case. Though many of these details cannot be fully proved nor entirely refuted, they could have been the reason for Adnan's rightful freedom. Today, he is incarcerated in a Baltimore prison awaiting appeal.
Of course, many people think Adnan Syed is guilty of murdering Hae by contradicting himself, by saying, “I am in here for my own mistakes.” He might have been on the edge of confessing his guilt until Sarah caught this and asked what he meant, and quickly recovers from his mistake. Adnan also slips his tongue by saying that he wants people to only look at the evidence, and not his personality. If I were convicted of a crime I would certainly like to have my personality be looked at, if I were innocent. So they could see what good I have done.
These two reasons are all that a person should need to believe that Adnan didn't have enough motive, or time, to kill Hae. Jays testimony sets the timeline and proves there is enough evidence, which is not presented by Adnan’s lawyer, to say Adnan is innocent by a straying story. The time period where Hae could've been killed does not match Adnan’s timeline. Jay, who is a convicted felon, was the only witness and is trusted to give a good story. Cristina Gutierrez, who was Adnan’s lawyer, had medical issues that distracted her from using useful information in his case.
