The American Dream The once obtainable American Dream has slipped the grasp of this generation. Was it even present in the beginning? “The majority of Americans believe that it is more difficult to achieve the American Dream than it was 10 years ago.” (Analysis Report Par. 2) When living in a foreign country they view the United States as ‘the land of the free and the home of the brave’ they believe the roads are paved with gold and opportunity appears around every corner. “Through hard work and perseverance my father got a scholarship to study in a magical place, America, that shone as a beacon of freedom and opportunity to so many who had come before.” (Obama Par. 1) They flocked here, much like any other great migration. “Starting life in the absence of poverty with an equal opportunity to develop one’s innate capabilities.” (American Enterprise Institute Par. 1) Starting from the bottom and working your way up. This is one of the ‘principles’ of the American Dream. In our country the minorities are the ones on top. Equality means having the same opportunity as every person, everyone is different and they all come from different backgrounds. People rank each other based on different aspects of life, “there's actually been an increase in economic inequality over the past six years.” (Hooper Par. 6) Wealth and popularity being the two common factors. “Being wealthy isn’t the American dream, however having access to education, being free, and owning a home might be.” (American Enterprise Institute Par. 2). The American Dream is about living the good life, having a good job, having a good wife, having a good family, living in the perfect city, and no violence. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal” (Jefferson Par.2), but in reality throughout the course of mankind there have been and still are cases of people being treated as nothing more than
