Mary Todd Lincoln was born on December 13th, 1818 into a wealthy family. Her father was a successful merchant and politician, and his family helped found their town Lexington, Kentucky. But when Mary was six her mother died, and her new strict step-mother had little regard for her. Yet, Lincoln had a remarkable education for a girl. She went to a local academy and then to a boarding school. Mary left home to be with her sister in Springfield in the late 1830s. She was a young vivacious Kentucky belle so she naturally attracted many admirers with her outgoingness. One of them was up-and-coming politician and lawyer Abraham Lincoln. Abraham did call off their engagement, but they did get back together and got married on a day's notice on November 4th, 1842. Nine months later they had their first out of four kids, Robert Todd Lincoln. In 1846 they had their second child, Edward. Their homelife is very speculated, but it is agreed they were happy. She had quite a temper, but Abraham was patient and helped calm the fiery Mary. Lincoln proved to be quite the supporter of her husband’s political career. She would offer him advice, hosted events, and sought recommendations for him as he worked on advancing his career in public life. When Abraham won his congressional seat, Mary turned heads when she decided to accompany him to Washington for part of his term. But, her coming was probably for the best because the Lincolns made quite a team. When Abraham won the presidential election in 1860, he ran home yelling, "Mary, Mary, we are elected,".
