The Beatles and The Rolling Stones are the two most prominent bands of The British Invasion with both groups famous for their iconic sounds. Their styles were so well known that other British Invasion bands were often categorized as Beatles-type and Stones-type bands. One reason for their differences in sound is where they found inspiration. The Beatles were greatly influenced by early rock legends like Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry, Skiffle, and Motown; while the Stones took inspiration from blues music, especially the style of electric blues. Both bands started by playing covers of popular songs, but gradually each band developed their own style by beginning to write their own songs and experimenting with their music. The rebellious lyrics with some adult undertones fit in perfectly with the Stones image as the anti-Beatles, and its popularity greatly helped The Rolling Stones become successful in the US. One point of comparison is that both songs came out at a time when the bands were experimenting with their style. “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” came out at a time when The Rolling Stones were moving away from the blues towards blues-inspired rock and roll. “Yesterday” features instrumentation that was different from previous Beatles music.
