Reading is an important aspect of a child’s life and it’s crucial to a student’s education and most students and parents neglect to see that reading will make a huge impact during their studies as a student. While reading, I was constantly wondering how Danny would tell his father about his readings, or if Mr. Malter would die from his heart attacks and sicknesses. One day when I had sat down to read the assigned material for that week, I could not stop turning the pages and ended up reading nearly half the book in that sitting. This is what I first look for in a good book. Does it make me want to keep reading?

The Canadian gun law is a highly controversial topic with three primary standpoints: advocating for stricter regulations, supporting a reduction in restrictions, and maintaining current laws. Each standpoint has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. The American gun laws are simply a less restricted version of Canadian gun laws. Based on research, the United States has a higher death rate than Canada, meaning that there is more gun violence and Canadian gun laws should not decrease. This makes more people want the idea that Canadian gun restrictions should increase, but increasing can also bring downsides, based on research as well.

While it may be true that even if a student is reading Sports Illustrated, they will still become more literate and reflective than if they hadn’t read at all, it is also true that the student is then less likely to read the same desired material outside of class because they are already being forced to read it inside of class. Moreover, if class time is spent reading something such as Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers: The Story of Success, the student will be more inclined to read Sports Illustrated outside of class; thus, increasing their reading time altogether. On the report of Engaging Schools: Fostering High School Students’ Motivation to Learn, “studies have shown that students who read outside of school become better readers (Anderson, Wilson, and Fielding, 1988; Fielding, 1994; Guthrie, Schafer, Wang, and Afflerbach, 1995)” (64). Therefore, by engaging in materials which the students may not be interested in during the school day, they will be more likely to read other subject matters outside of school and consequently increase their reading
My relationship with literacy has been a journey all on its own. From learning how to sound out letters and words, to reading my first sentence , I have developed quite a valuable foundation and platform, that will eventually guide me to success. I have had the pleasure of experiencing a love that just continues to blossom. A love that will never fail, nor will I fail it. This love that I speak of is my passion for reading, writing and literacy as a whole.

The world of picture books soon came to a close and so arrived the multitude of textbooks along with simple chapter books. My mind wasn’t ready to fully comprehend all that was being thrown my way. Which in turn caused me to fall behind my classmates as a consequence, I was sent to Guided Reading more than my peers. We would sit in a tiny room around a tiny table with three to four other students. They gave us picture books to start with.
