“Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold…” That quote is from The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton set in mid 1960s Tulsa, Oklahoma. It is about Ponyboy’s struggle to grow up among the fighting of the Greasers and the Socs. One character that stands out in the story is Johnny because he is a supportive character to Ponyboy.
In the book The Outsiders, author S.E Hinton changes Johnny’s character from shy and nervous in the beginning to brave. She uses the fire scene in chapter 6 to reveal this new side of Johnny by having him heroically rescue the children and save Ponyboy’s life. Firstly, Johnny is so shy and nervous around people he’s always quiet and can barely say hi. The text states, "“Johnny wouldn’t open his mouth unless he was forced to.”
In the novel The Outsiders, there are things motivating Dally, Johnny, and Ponyboy to save the children caught in the church fire. One piece of evidence that shows the motive of Ponyboy is “’I bet we started it,” I said to Johnny. ‘We must have dropped a lighted cigarette or something’” (Hinton 70). Ponyboy must’ve felt guilty that he may have caused the fire so he went to save the children in exchange for his mishap.
So in conclusion Johnny Cade is the hero of The Outsiders because he died because he went into a burning building to save the
Johnny saved them, but injured himself badly. Then, Johnny died as a hero. In this story, Johnny saved Ponyboy from drowning in a fountain by killing a Soc. Also, when the church caught on fire Johnny took the chance and saved kids who were trapped.
In “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton, Greasers are people who live in poor neighborhoods. Growing up a greaser doesn’t mean you can’t be a hero. Not all greasers are JDs or hoods like Dally. Sometimes, they can be heroic, like Johnny Cade.who they are. Johnny Cade was definitely a hero, despite being a greaser.
Some people are insane, crazy, some might call them psychotic. Johnny Cade is the least psychotic person known in the book, The Outsiders. Johnny is a character from The Outsiders, this is a book based around a 1960’s gang war. There are 2 gangs and Johnny was a member of the Greasers gang. He murdered a member of the opposing gang they called the socs in defense of his friend Ponyboy and himself.

Johnny was a 16-year-old boy who was part of a social group called the greasers. He was known as the gang’s pet and everyone’s kid brother. He grew up in an unstable home where his parents verbally and physically abused him.
In young adult literature there are many characters who leave a perennial impression on the reader. Many of these are considered dynamic characters because of changes they induced throughout the plot. In S.E. Hinton’s novel The Outsiders, Johnny Cade is a character that goes through a major change in personality. At first a boy who is afraid of his own shadow, Johnny turns into a gallant hero that risked his life to save children.
Johnny is a hero for doing what is right not easy. The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton (16 at the time) is a thrilling book about the majority of society being split up into two groups of millennial teens. The more prosperous group is the Socs who are always looking for a fight. The less fortunate group is the greasers just trying to lay low and stay in there lain but never back out of a fight. Ponyboy and Johnny decide to run away from there home and on the way face challenges that prove Johnny to be a hero.
His friend’s life was on the line and though he wasn’t all mentally there, he knew enough to act fast. His decision took the life of one, but saved an innocent life. He was wanted for murder, but in reality he was innocent and there is proof to show it. The first reason that Johnny is innocent is that he saved Ponyboy.
When Ponyboy was being attacked by the Socs Johnny didn't run away like a coward, Even with Johnny's fear of the Socs he accidently kills the guy that was holding Ponyboy. He is also caring towards Ponyboy when he notices how worried Soda and Darry are for Ponyboy, he decides to turn himself in. When Johnny realizes he is about to die his last thought was for Ponyboy
Johnny Cade came from a rough family in the story The Outsiders. He and his friends were often jumped and beaten by the socs (the kids from the other side of town that hates kids on his side of town.) was called a “Greaser” and had abusive parents till the day he died. Johnny was smaller than his friends Dally, Ponyboy, Sodapop, Darry, Two Bit and Steve. He was a loyal friend in the story for many reasons one being that he was always there for his friends in their time of need.
