Response Essay to “The Children of the Drug War,”

In the article “The Children of the Drug War,” by Sonia Nazario (2014), New York Times, tells all the angles between Central America’s child refugees and other countries’ ways of handling it. Children are suffering, separated from families, and enduring horrifying events. Sonia Nazario writes reasons child refugees leave their own country to flee to the USA. Refugees are looking for a new life in the States because they want better opportunity, to reunite with their family, and to find a safe place without drugs and violence inflicted on them anymore. “She was clubbed over the head and dragged off by two men who cut a hole in her throat, stuffed her panties in it, and left her body in a ravine across from Christian's house” (Nazario, 2014). This kind of behavior was provoked by gang affiliated personnel who were refused of $5 when attempting to rob the little girl. The little girl did nothing to inflict this on herself, out on the streets alone, she hardly had a chance. Christian, also a young boy, witnessed her body. The body was found directly across the way from where he calls home. Seeing death first hand puts the young boy in fear and will affect his perspective: maybe change how he develops and choices he is facing as he grows up. I understand the struggle, it can be in some sense. I'm not a refugee, but I can relate to seeing too much out on the streets. Crypt side pulled a knife out on my ex boyfriend, tried robbing us of our bags. It’s unsafe out there. Situations can flip a switch downhill in the blink of an eye. To all the refugees without their parents, siblings, friends, I can relate to feeling alone- abandoned without any of my family- passed around my whole life through adoption. Locked out of old houses, cold, alone. People won't always stay around. I believe this quote strongly supports the lives of these children. Previously the history shown for child refugee protection has proven to be weak but there are plenty of people trying to help strengthen and resolve some of the key issues. There is an organization mentioned in the article known as “Kids in Need of Defense,” helping appoint representation for children who need an attorney, provided by the state, or volunteer for the case. “Kids in Need of Defense,” tries to help voice for the refugee children who were too frightened to proceed in court. “Narcos have bought off police officers, politicians, and judges… 4 out of 5 homicides were never investigated.” (Naziaro, 2014) Which is prime example as why the state needs to provide more help for these kids.
