The Cold War began shortly after the end of World War II, one of the most horrendous conflicts in the history of America. It was a period of tension between the democracies in the Western World and the communists of Eastern Europe which lasted from 1945 through 1991. Although the United States and the Soviet Union never officially declared war on each other, they competed against each other in a non-hostile belligerency including the Cold War and Nuclear Arms Race.
