Censorship is one of the most controversial issues in America today. Practically everyone has a cell phone, computer, and complete access to the internet. Clicking on Google or Yahoo news will suddenly bring up uncensored articles of the horrible events going on around us. In technicality, we all have the right to post anything that we would like on the internet. And it is in our best interest to think about what we post on the internet because our posts are on the internet…forever! There is a significant amount of debate on whether censorship affects us as a society or doesn’t at all. Kids might all resonate with the desperation or confusion as to why some sites were blocked in high school classrooms, even though they know there is no bad content on certain websites. All kids nowadays know what YouTube is and a lot of them spend hours on end scouring the depths of it…I know my brothers do! Censorship in the school systems has changed over time since the growth of the internet. ‘Back in the days’, it was easier to monitor the internet usage of kids because there were only a couple of computers within the library, technology wasn’t as advanced, and adult supervision was almost everywhere. Yet, since the fast growth of the internet and advances in technology, it has become almost impossible to monitor what these kids are doing on the internet. YouTube has videos that shouldn’t be watched by young children, but are readily available just with the click of a button. Though, the main issues at school with internet filtering is that this censorship, even if it is bad, hinders a lot of the kids to have access to the information that they deserve to have. On top of that, “poor students have less off-campus access than do their classmates”, so they may as well not even be exposed to some of this information (Bell). It isn’t a new topic that has risen due to the invention of the internet, but it has been reinforced because of the vast connections the platform provides. Though YouTube was only created about 10 years ago, it has opened a lot of doors between people–culturally and physically–which would have otherwise not happened. Long ago, people might have had connections throughout town but it never went farther than that. Now, we have connections all over the world with access to almost anything possible with just the push of the search button on YouTube. Even though there are disadvantages, the advantages surpass the downsides. We are exposed to so much more and can connect, learn, seek information that was not possible even as little as 30 years
