School Uniforms The debate between whether or not schools should have uniforms has been an ongoing topic for many years. Typically, they consist of khakis, black pants, or a black skirt with a t-shirt of school colors and black shoes. A lot of private schools and technical schools require school uniforms, whereas public schools are more involved in the debate. They are used so everyone is wearing the same thing. Although some authorities believe that creating a school uniform policy would cut back on discipline problems, increase school spirit, and have a positive effect on students’ attitudes, that’s not necessarily the case. I am against school uniforms because they are a violation of students’ rights, they are ineffective, and they are typically very costly. …show more content…

According to Matt Forsten and Denise B. Geier, “Requiring students to wear uniforms is essentially a restriction of a student’s right to free expression” (2015). Many students express themselves through the clothes that they wear. The clothes they wear are used to express individuality, fashion sense, and sometimes even ethnicity or religion. Student have the right to wear their own clothes and that shouldn’t be taken away from them. Since uniforms are ineffective, I am against them being required in schools. “There is no conclusive data to show that school uniforms solve any problems they were created to solve” (Forster & Geier, 2015). Without any data to prove them to be effective, it is considered to be ineffective. Many authorities believe that school uniforms improve behavior within schools, but if that is the case then it needs to be proven. As of right now that proof does not exist.
