The Corrupt Environment In 'The Marrow Thieves'

The corrupt environment in The Marrow Thieves lets characters like Frenchie remain positive in the face of upcoming disappointment while collaborating with others to survive, ultimately leading to him learning how to make better choices while educating the readers on the lessons of human nature throughout character development.
The Marrow Thieves, written by Cherie Dimaline, is a story taking place in a dreamless apocalyptic state of the world. “‘And all of those pipelines in the ground? They snapped like icicles and spewed bile over forests, into lakes, drowning whole reserves and towns. When the demise of the sort does occur, it allows the person affected by it to understand the trial and error that a human being can develop “I heard him whine a little at the end of his plea. But then, maybe it was just the wind. I pulled the trigger and the wind stopped blowing” (Dimaline 137). Although this is a low point of Frenchies' journey he is still able to communicate this experience with his father whom he hasn’t seen for years. “‘Dad?’ ‘Yeah?’ He was lowering himself onto a cot. ‘Mitch gave himself to them, so that I could get away. Mom, well, mom couldn’t’” (Dimaline 176). This quote shows the communication Frenchie and his father have and that they are able to relate and compare their stories, teaching each other the nature of better choices as they are able to trust each other deeply. Once Frenchie is reunited with his father, they can share their stories and educate or learn from other characters to gain an understanding of the negative and the positive of human nature. Being educated on the types of human nature that exist in this world and relating to the world outside of the story shows the readers the characters' emotions.
