Air Test Prep (English) Food waste is a big problem in today's life and it’s mostly all because of food labels. Food labels are the little stickers that are small printed on the cans, boxes, or bottles of edible stuff you buy. They usually are the things that say “sell by.” or “best used by.”. These little pieces of information are for the marketers and us to eat things at peak quality. The articles “Food date labels may not mean what you think they mean” by Kristofor Husted and “The Dating Game: Demystifying Food Expiration Dates to Reduce Food Waste” by Emily Broad Leib, both provide factual information and points on why food labels need to be different, although bringing up the fact that the people selling the food need the food labels to tell them when to take things off …show more content…

It is clear that these labeling tactics need to be changed. One reason the food labels need to be made differently is that there are people all over the world without any food, and we go around throwing away good food because of a few unneeded numbers! It’s also a money waster for us, too. In the passage “The Dating Game: Demystifying Food Expiration Dates to Reduce Food Waste,” in paragraph 7, Leib states that “The average American household loses $1560 annually by purchasing food they end up throwing away.” This shows that a lot of food goes uneaten. If we didn’t rely on food labels to tell us when to throw things out, we probably would have eaten much more than they did. Another reason we should change the labels is that when we waste things, or discard them, most of it typically ends up in a landfill. When things end up in landfills, they pollute the Earth. Animals or plants can get tangled in food cans or wraps. It’s estimated that about 40% of people on average go uneaten (Leib 7).
