“The Digital Parent trap” is an argumentative article written for parents by Eliana Dockterman that demonstrates how and why technology should be introduced and embraced by students in order to heighten their knowledge and education; she supports her argument through the use of pathos and logos but loses her credibility in her counter-argument by not fully elaborating on it.
Eliana Dockterman’s article starts off by showing the example of a parent that is teaching his sons and daughter how to use the computer and internet then contrasting this with a mother and an institution that disapproves technology use for the education of children. She quotes several anthropology experts and education administrators as to what their opinions are. Dockterman establishes different ways that technology helps student and young adults like: increase of retention rates, future planning, unlimited learning, and the introduction of new interests; however, she also introduces the negative impacts and threats of technology and internet like: sexual predators, depression, diabetes, cyberbullying, sexting, and attention deficiency disorders. At last, Eliana Dockterman resolves to the conclusion that technology is a privilege and should be monitored to prevent tragedies.
Eliana Dockterman’s use of logos supports her argument against the use of technology for minors when she mentions that only half of the US parent population welcomes the use of technology in school. In other words, fifty percent of U.S. parents are against having technology as the predominant form
