The Elegant Universe Sparknotes

937 Words4 Pages

The book “The Elegant Universe” talks about various aspects of physics, with priority on superstring theory, lesser known as string theory. By first discussing some of the fundamental forces, it leads the way to the discussion of light speed, motion and mechanics, and again, paves the way for the next chapter until the end. It seems to be assessing the quality of the theory by addressing some it’s ‘rights and wrongs’. The validity of the claims in the book seem to be nicely founded on great scientific theories with brilliant explanation on it all. Brian Greene, the author, graduated in the top ten of his class at Harvard University and then proceeded to attend Oxford University on a scholarship where he received his doctorate in 1987.

The first two parts of the book are an introduction of sorts, introducing the theory of relativity as well as the theory of quantum mechanics. Also mentioned in the first part is the ‘central problem of modern physics,’ which is described to be the incompatibility of Einstein’s theory of general relativity with quantum mechanics. It is mentioned that these two theories are unified with string theory, as prior to string theory they conflicted with each other. Part three is more of a history of string theories that also brings up design. In this part, it is discussed in detail how string theory works. Part four talks a lot about Einstein’s notions of space, time, and matter and discusses how string theory changes the
