Paraphrasing In my opinion, the purpose of the essay, “Life under the Chief Doublespeak Officer” the author, William Lutz shares a descriptive analogy of doublespeak words and terms used in this era by American businesses to manipulate. These words and terms are used everywhere from the corporate world, financial institutions to small independent businesses. One descriptive writing pattern used in this essay is compare the Unfamiliar to the Familiar where Lutz used buzzwords as “competitive dynamics” (unfamiliar) and provides a related word as “synergy” for an effective description of how doublespeak can be an effective, but eluded practice in business. AMCD Multicultural Counseling Competencies The AMCD has made its own guidelines for mental health counselors to be more culturally competent when they practice. There are 3 section for the guidelines which are making sure the counselor is aware of their own biases, second the counselor has to develop an awareness of the client’s views, and finally the counselor needs to have appropriate strategies for intervention when dealing with multicultural clients. These guidelines can be found in the AMCD (Multicultural Counseling Competencies, 1996). Counselors are urged to explore themselves on a deeper level.
Often times today, people of other racial classes and ethnic groups are experiencing oppression as a marginalized group in society today. Racial biases and culture have become an important issue in mental health due to social constructs, racial stereotypes and racial ideology. As a result, they tend to have an impact human development, racial and cultural identity. Therefore, it has become necessary for counselors to indentify and become fully aware and competent in this area due to the changes our society has undergone in multiculturalism and globalization. The American Counseling Association is the largest association of professional counselors worldwide, they define counseling as “a collaborative effort between the counselor and client. Professional counselors help clients identify goals and potential solutions to problems which cause emotional turmoil; seek to improve communication and coping skills; strengthen self-esteem; and promote behavior change and optimal mental health”.

So, healthcare providers face certain challenges and restrictions because a patient’s belief may inhibit professionals from providing the most effective care. When I was done completing the “Multicultural Counseling Competencies: A Self Examination” assessment, I became aware of my strengths, weaknesses, and areas where I need to grow as a future college counselor. Authors Pompeo and Levitt (2014) define self-reflection as the conscious decision that which an individual acknowledges and evaluates their actions. Thus, these said actions could include being forthcoming about the intentions and motives that are considered personal benefits. In addition, the center of self-reflection consists of the individual’s emotions, thoughts, and feelings. Historically, society as a whole has encountered many adverse situations regarding multicultural counseling, all of which have strengthened the core of the profession. Counseling for many years was entangled with the ideology of monocultural disciplines, which deemphasizes the notion of cultural diversity in the profession of counseling. This is significant as due to the premature societies, it was considered the norm to be associated with a single dominant cultural group where its values, behaviors, expectations, and methodologies were assumed to be the catalyst for all other cultures to follow. Seemingly, the previously mentioned became problematic and unorthodox, as societies across the world continued to expand racially and ethnically.
Adherence to professional ethics is a foundational aspect of counseling practice. As students, we are trained to be ethically competent, providing the most principled treatment for our clients. Yet, ethical issues are not just encountered by novice counselors, experienced practitioners face ethical dilemmas throughout their career, as well. The American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics (2014) sets ethical obligations and provides guidance for how to manage ethical dilemmas. The code considers professional values that counselors should be aware of, but also ethical principles that guide practice (ACA, 2014).
