AMCD Multicultural Counseling Competencies The AMCD has made its own guidelines for mental health counselors to be more culturally competent when they practice. There are 3 section for the guidelines which are making sure the counselor is aware of their own biases, second the counselor has to develop an awareness of the client’s views, and finally the counselor needs to have appropriate strategies for intervention when dealing with multicultural clients. These guidelines can be found in the AMCD (Multicultural Counseling Competencies, 1996). Counselors are urged to explore themselves on a deeper level. They are encouraged to explore the inner most depths of their minds to uncover biases, personal beliefs and world views that may be hidden in the unconscious. The reason for this is to make them better counselors so that it can strengthen are awareness so that we can put the needs of multicultural clients first, and devise treatments that fit them as an individual. I would say that the AMCD main weakness is that we are still educating counselors with the older theories that excluded minorities and other cultural groups. They can incorporate techniques that are being used for different cultural groups to include everyone in the guidelines. Part of the AMCD’s strength is to uncover personal biases, but they need to apply that theory to the guidelines and root out their biases to better serve the masses. The other recommendation I would make is adding a way for counselors to analyze their progress in rooting out their biases. Its like taking an exam and then being able to take it over again when you take it the first time you are able to see where you still need to improve on and you can work on those areas, and the second time around hopefully you have a better score and can continue the process.
