Multicultural counseling and therapy (MCT), defined by Sue et al. (2022) refers to both a role and a process which aims to create treatment goals that work in tandem with the client’s cultural values and their experiences. MCT examines a client in relation to their individual selves, their group affiliations, and their universal identity. Approaches to counseling lesbian women of color can include interventions such as narrative therapy, feminist multicultural therapy with the integration of spirituality, and affirmative therapy. These issues of multiculturalism for lesbians of color and treatment options are not exhaustive as every person can have different marginalization experiences and a clinician can bring a unique approach to their work with a client.
Before transitioning to challenges for lesbian women of color, it is important to acknowledge that there is a community of lesbians who are gender diverse and have potentially uplifting and oppressive experiences relative to their gender identity and sexual orientation.
