Annotated Bibliography: Racial Profiling This is an annotated bibliography researching the reasons for, effects of, and solutions to racial profiling by law enforcement in the United States. I am researching racial profiling and is it justified in law enforcement.
Of course, many will disagree on the grounds that police do not target minorities and they just happen to live in high crime areas. According to Racial Profiling: Is racial profiling a necessary police practice? " Some proponents of racial profiling argue that minority populations have a responsibility to be accountable for their own actions rather than blaming law enforcement officials for merely doing their jobs." Supporters of racial profiling argue that these minorities who live in high crime areas are just looking for someone to blame instead of being aware of their own actions. Although I grant that not all law enforcement are to blame for racial profiling, I still maintain that those police officers who still choose to use racial profiling
Racial profiling is a problem across the entire nation in law enforcement. In every community it differs to who is being oppressed, and it usually depends on the type of race and ethnicity the community holds. As to us, our culture and setting consist of a high percentage of hispanics and latinos, so here comes to our problem as to who is being targeted mostly in our racist issues with the police brutally. The problem we face in our community is the fact that being from the culture, we grew up in all policemen stereotype latinos for the way they make look or speak.
In a certain study, relationship was conducted between public opinion on racial profiling in conjunction with their viewpoint of race relation and their perceived awareness of safety. The study shown that race relations came with a statistical correlation with the legitimacy of racial profiling and the results were even insightful by revealing that racial profiling was widespread and racial tension was difficult to fix as opposed to racial profiling than those who did not believe racial profiling was as widespread or that racial tensions would eventually be fixed. In Canada there has also been increased accusation of racial profiling of visible minorities who persistently accuse the law enforcement officers of targeting them because of their ethnic background. According to a 2005 Kingston survey, a city where most inhabitants are white, it was indicated that blacks were
300359810 Mrs. Fahey ERWC 12-Period 2 14 September 2015 Racial Profiling Racial discrimination is becoming a major problem in today 's society. Our nation is facing problems based on the discrimination on race, ethnicity, religion or national origin. Racial profiling is a clear violation of the civil rights of the United States.
Racial or any profiling compiles behavioral characteristics associated with particular criminal actions, creating an original form of a yet unknown people who might be more likely than others to perpetrate the crime. The serial killer profiling was generated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which use crime scene evidence that implies the character of the perpetrator and helps narrow the scope of analysis. It was based on lengthy interviews with 33 convicted killers, an actual grounding like to the drug carrier sketch of Operation Pipeline (below). Racial profiling results when a complicated set of factors (which can include race) including a particular criminal profile are torn away in practice, transformed into an unjustified reduction: “Minorities are more prone to have drugs or commit additional crimes than are whites.”
It does not happen very often: Fifty youths are protesting with signs like “Let us vote” and chanting things like “Our voices matter,” outside the office of Ohio’s Secretary of State Jon Husted in Columbus, Ohio, then, suddenly, they learn that they’ve won. “We did it!” protest organizer Meredith Whitaker, 17, shouted into a megaphone. “We’re showing the government that they might not care about us, but we care about them.”
How would you think someone felt if they were stopped by officers based on their looks? Racial profiling has been a problem for a long time. Racial profiling is when a law enforcement official believes someone committed an offense based on that person 's ethnicity, race, religion and national origin. A form of policing that is usually used in law enforcement is the Terry Stop or the Stop-question and frisk method. This is a method where people are stopped and suspected of doing a crime.
Is it ever justified to use racial profiling? Racial profiling is a progressing issue used incorrectly in determining if a person is a threat to the community of nation. In some cases it is claimed to be justified; when making potential threat assessments. The rest of the time, it is not justified to use racial profiling and it is just considered racism and stereotyping. Can we all live in a world where our appearance determines if we are a criminal, educated, a threat, ect?
it’s time to hold law enforcement liable for their actions and practices involving targeting people because of their race, nationality and ethnicity. Racial profiling is a disputable topic in today’s society that has worsened over the years. Some might argue that social media is the reason for all the controversy; believing its influencing peoples attitude toward a certain direction depending on the situation, others believe minorities are being targeted.
There are many other people that are being racial profiled and discriminated on such as Arabs, and Muslims. “There is a basic assumption underlying racial profiling in the counterterrorism context, predominantly at airports and border crossings, is most likely to be committed by members of a particular racial, ethnic or religious group (in this context, Arabs and Muslims), and that members of that group are, in general, more likely than non-members to be involved in that type of criminal activity.” (civil rights) Like all the other assumptions that are being made these too are false. Authorities cannot go around racial profiling and discriminate on people just because of their color. This too is wrong and it needs to be stopped.
I see a few different reasons why racial profiling still exists. Not that I think that it is right but I come from a town where there are literally a handful of African Americans at a time. And for a long time they would only stay a few weeks before they were harassed out of town. Law enforcement would keep an eye on them and if they seemed to be causing trouble, it never failed that they would pack up and head out before a few weeks had gone by.
Racial profiling has become a national issue starting in 2015 (“Racial”). Judging someone for their race has been a problem ever since a minority group has been noticed. Racial profiling has spread over all over the world. Racial profiling has been a problem through the years, if the human race can learn what racial profiling is, advantages of the profiling, and the disadvantages.
Racial Profiling in America Racial profiling is defined as refers to the targeting of particular individuals by law enforcement authorities based not their behavior, but rather their personal characteristics ( The Leadership conference) . This is another mechanism for racial discrimination backed by the law. According to the The Leadership conference, racial discrimination is not solely on race, but based on religion, ethnicity and national origin.
Throughout history, disputes and tensions between law enforcement officials and communities of minorities have endured hostility and violence between each other. Racial profiling has become a “hot topic” for researchers as well as for politicians and by now it is likely that most citizens are at least aware of the common accusations of racial bias pitted against law enforcement (Cochran & Warren, 2013). Communities of color are being discriminated against and racially profiled by white police officers for any suspicion of criminal activities. It has been widely assumed by policy makers and citizens alike that allegations of racial profiling are mostly associated with the policing practices of white officers and their treatment of racial and ethnic minorities (Cochran & Warren, 2013). Also, individuals of minority descent will certainly recognize that they are being racially profiled during a stop that is being conducted by a white police officer.
