Imagine what its like to be under a label, it may not seem like that big of a deal, but it really is. If someone is born under a label that label sticks with them. It is as much part of them as their entire life on this earth. Most people will see them as a label, weather that be good or bad it is not fair and, in some cases, could be very bad for the person being seen as a label, people could see them as a class, a race, or inferior because of a past deed. Situations like this are shown in the book “Flawed” where these ideas of labels are taken to the extreme. Labels can matter a lot in our modern lives, they can alter how people see others, they alter how people

And a very good example of this altering effect is from the book “Flawed”. For example, “[The Flawed] still live among us but are ostracized by society, having to live under separate rules” (5). This excerpt from the book shows how the flawed are forced to live. Their lives are forcibly downgraded. Not to mention that they are ostracized by society. People don’t want to associate with the flawed or have anything to do with them, they may not be in jail but they are in a sort of prison for the rest of their lives. One can see similarities in real life as well. Not too long-ago segregation was in place in America, and even continued well into the 90s in places like South Africa. Segregation is a cruel system that is based on only race. In the United States from after the Civil War well into the 1960s African American citizens where not given the same rights or privileges as White Americans. If people live under a label people may start to feel powerless and hopeless with the situation. In the book “Flawed” this is mirrored extremely well with how the Flawed are treated; for example the book states “All Flawed files are a matter of public record, available through citizen information, because everybody is entitled to know if they are living near a Flawed person, unless of course you are a Flawed person and you, therefore, have no access to these files” (266). This is just one of the many ways that the lives of flawed are downgraded. Everyone that is not a Flawed has the liberty to know where every Flawed is. This may seem like nothing, but the rules continue to pile up, only 2 Flawed can sit with each other, they can’t meet in large groups without a non-flawed person, they can only eat the bare minimum to live. The Flawed are forced to wear armbands to identify themselves. They are always defined by the worst day of their lives. You can see a lot of similarities in real life with ex-convicts / prisoners. Many do serve time and leave prison but what never leaves them are the titles, “ex-convict” or “ex-offender” are titles that will never leave them and will probably affect the rest of their lives. In a way, they are still in a prison yet this time instead of bars it’s a title that can never be
