Portrait of America Volume 1 by Stephen B. Oates and Charles J. Errico Bound for Canaan: Harriet Tubman, Harriet Beecher Stowe, & the Underground Railroad Harriet Tubman once said, “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the starts to change the world.” That quote is about her because her dream of freeing the slaves began with a dreamer and that dreamer is herself. I would have to say that Harriet would remember this quote every time she would travel via the Underground Railroad to save slaves.
Florian is one of the four main characters in "Salt to the Sea" by Ruta Sepetys. He is a young Prussian art restorer who is fleeing from the Soviet Union during World War II. Throughout the novel he experiences both internal and external conflicts. These experiences teach Florian that he has to learn to trust and rely on the other characters. These experiences lead Florian to change from being a solitary, independent person, to learn to trust and rely on others.
Ernest Clines ideas on a dystopian world depend upon current world events, to show his perspective on the future of our world if society continues under our path of scientific and world exploration, using the idea of the OASIS as an escape, as well as the root cause of the issue. Current world events and events in Ernest Clines book ‘Ready Player 1’ show why he feared the idea of the future. Today, large events are occurring: The enhancement of AI, the large housing crisis, Global Warming, etc. These events portray the most prominent issues within the book.
“I felt no pity for him. In fact I was pleased with what was happening to him” (Wiesel 52). Elie Wiesel’s character became a brute, because he witnessed children being killed, death everywhere and his loss of faith. Wiesel watched people get hung with no phase of tears. Wiesel writes in his book after the war, “watched others hangings.”
Andrew McGrew Theofelis Adv English 2 April 16, 2024 Lost in the Water Emotions are hard-wired into every human brain. They dictate not only the way we think, but also the decisions we make. Some emotions bring color to an otherwise dull world, such as happiness and joy. Though not all emotions are positive.
Howard Roark is a man who puts his pride above all else. He believes that what others think is not as important as what one thinks of one’s self. It was crucial for him to continuously ruin his life, as well as others, to make a point about his beliefs. From refusing the Manhattan Bank Building contract to stealing Gail Wynand’s wife, Roark has always been a selfish man. In The Fountainhead Roark repeatedly makes the mistake of refusing and giving happiness in hopes of denouncing altruism and praising selfishness.
“Again Hal’s whip fell upon the dogs. They threw themselves against the breastbands, dug their feet into the packed snow, got down low to it, and put forth all their strength. The whip was whistling savagely, when once more Mercedes interfered.” This quote is from the book, Call of the Wild, by, Jack London. Jack London quit school when he was 14 and traveled for several years.
We can see their eyes, green and yellow as coals, watching us from the tree branches beyond” (84). When he was living under the protection of the City, he was unaware of how to perform these tasks. However, once he left, he had to employ cognition to determine what he should do and how he should go about doing it. This was important to his survival, as Ayn Rand’s philosophy of objectivism states. The desire for individuals not to sacrifice themselves for others is present in

The film Schindler 's list, produced by Steven Spielberg in 1993 was based on the book "Schindler 's Ark" written by Thomas Keneally. The Fish The fish is like no other character in the novel. It displays an incredible amount of strength. The biggest example of this is the way that it swims. When it is first hooked it begins swimming against the current of the sea if for no other reason than to show off.
In Ayn Rand's novel "The Fountainhead," Ellsworth Toohey is a manipulative character who seeks to control other characters through his use of language and deception. When he tells Keating that he is the "most selfless man" Keating has ever known, he is trying to assert his power over Keating by making him believe that he has no selfish motives towards him. Toohey is an evil person who supports collectivism and mediocre performance in order to destroy the individualist nature of the people in the book. He seeks to do this by promoting the idea that success is not achieved through individual effort, but rather through the collective efforts of society as a whole. Tooheys behavior throughout the book shows that he is anything but unselfish.
I chose Al Capone, because I like to think he was a historical figure. I also chose him, because I think it was kind of cool he was a gangster, pimp, gambler, and a bootlegger. I know people say he was a bad guy, well a lot of people say that, but I still like him. One of his quotes is “You can get further with a kind word and a gun than you can with just a kind word.” I would meet Al Capone when he was in Eastern State Penitentiary in 1932.
