Ovarian Cancer Ovarian cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the ovaries. Women have two ovaries, one on each side of the uterus. The ovaries — each about the size of an almond — produce eggs (ova) as well as the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Ovarian cancer happens when cells that are not normal grow in one or both of your ovaries. The ovaries are two small glands, located on either side of your uterus. They produce female sex hormones and store and release eggs (ova). Ovarian cancer is when cancer forms from the ovary. The first stage consists of three stages: the first stage which is called stage 1a occurs when the cancer starts to grow in one of the two ovaries, the second stage which is called stage 1b occurs when the cancer is inside both of the ovaries, and the third stage which is called stage 1c occurs when the cancer is inside both of the ovaries and starts to grow on the surface of the ovary or in the fluid that located in the abdomen.
