I think that the theme of a dystopian book, The Giver, is that, escape to the freedom. The “Community” in the book seems like a utopia. People in the Community are blessed with high technology, painless lives, and polite people. But only one strange thing is that there are too many rules. The protagonist, Jonas, was enjoying his life in the Community. But from one scene in the book, when Jonas met the key person, The Giver, his eyes to see the world had been changed. So he couldn’t get deal of it so he escaped from the Community, to seek for freedom. Some causes made Jonas to escape from the society can be splitted into three main groups: his mind to resist; shocks he got; the horrifying truth of the Community. First of all, when the protagonist meet the The Giver for his first training, he apologized to The Giver. But The Giver said, “No apologies in this room. We haven’t time.” I think what he actually meant to do was a bit of resistance against the Community. To retaliate to the Community for forcing him to have all the pains. Jonas might be influenced indirectly by The Giver’s action. Because he broke some rules of the Community to escape from there. So Jonas’s mind that resistance to the …show more content…

An example from the book, Jonas told his friend that there are colors in this world when he became able to recognize colors but they couldn’t see them. Another example, Jonas realized that there are no pains in the Community. He didn’t know what the pain is until the time when The Giver gives Jonas a memory of the pains. In the Community, you will almost never get any injuries or pains. Even though you get an injury, latest medical treatment is available for you. These event could impress on Jonas’s mind that people are adapted to live in the Community. As a summary, shocking facts that Jonas found led him to escape to the
