In modern society there are many good things overlooked. There are different freedoms and other choices we can make; however, in The Giver that is a different story. In The Giver there are many differences from from our society but, there still is a few similarities from modern society and The Giver society. There are many differences from modern society and from The Giver society some are the rules, the family units, and the leadership in both societies. One huge difference is the rules between both societies. On page one it says “At first, he had been only fascinated. He had never seen aircraft so close, for it was against the rules for pilots to fly over the community” (Lowery 1). This rule is very strange to have in a community. Another strange rule is from page four “I apologize to my classmates” (Lowery 4). “Asher concluded…” (Lowery 4). “We accept your apology, Asher” (Lowery 4). “The class recited the standard response in unison” (Lowery 4). In The Giver if you make a mistake you have to apologize then everyone that heard the apology has to say they accept the apology. On page 38 it says “Jonas brightened. He knew about the pills. His parents both took them each morning. And some of his friends did, he knew” (Lowery 38). In The Giver the pills control how the people feel and how the people act. In modern day government they do not give you pills to take everyday to get you to act the way they want you to.
