The Giver To start off, I think that Lois Lowry wrote this book for three reasons. I think she wanted to tell all the children in the world that if we allow too much power, our community will be lifeless, and emotionless. I also think that she wrote this to tell us about what is also happening in our world right now. The last reason that I think she wrote this book is about the condition of her father, who lost his memory and wants to show us that without memories, we are truly lost. Firstly, I think she wanted to tell the children in the world that we can’t allow a group of people with too much power. In the book, Jonas’s community is controlled by a group of individuals who control everything to make their life “perfect”. The Great Flood ran from April to October, coming from the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. There also was the California wildfires, which destroyed 7,000 homes and over 16,000 acres. I feel that she might have tied these in with the story in different ways. Lastly, I think she wrote this because of her father, who had to be put in a nursing home, because of his loss of memories. She said he does not have Alzheimer's, but was losing his memories because of old age. He could not remember much, including Lois’s sister’s death, at an age of 28. She once showed a picture of her sister to him, and he asked who she was and what had happened to her. Explaining this was a hard thing for her, and for a fleeting moment, she thought how much better our lives would be if we didn’t have memories at all. With this thought, she began to write The
