The Maze Runner takes place in The Glade. This is a small living place separated from the Maze by walls. The Maze is a dangerous place that has changing paths and is filled with slug-like, spike-covered deadly creatures called grievers. No one has ever escaped the Maze, since Alby’s arrival two years before The Maze Runner takes place.
Thomas is a teenage boy who wakes in The Glade and doesn’t know what’s going on. There are other teenage boys standing around him and he has no memories, except for his own name. A huge maze surrounds the glade, where mechanical creatures called Grievers roam at night. Supplies and a new boy are sent once a week; in a metal cage, that the boys call the “Box”. Thomas learns about The Maze, The Glade, and befriends the other boys. In particular, Thomas befriends Chuck, Alby, Minho, and Newt. Chuck, a chubby young boy who had arrived a week before Thomas, quickly befriended Thomas and acted like his little brother. Alby is the leader of the Gladers, and he enforces the rules they set to survive. He and Minho are the Runners, the boys with the job of running to look for the exit to the maze. They must return to The Glade before the doors close, otherwise they will be stuck in the maze with the Grievers. Newt used to be a runner, until he hurt his leg when he attempted suicide, because of the hard life in The Glade and as a Runner.
