Standards-based instructional goals: According to the Glossary of Education Reform, Standards-based instructional goals refer to, “...systems of instruction, assessment, grading, and academic reporting that are based on students demonstrating understanding or mastery of the knowledge and skills they are expected to learn as they progress through their education.” ("Standards-Based Definition - The Glossary of Education Reform," 2014) In other words, this method is a way we as teachers are assessing, grading, reporting, and teaching our lessons. We are able to evaluate our students based on the mastery of their knowledge and skills throughout the school year and adjust accordingly.

Yet, this isn’t the only way we identify student learning. Through out the school year teachers will need a way to record student achievements so we use a form called assessments.
Assessments are a way to identify students learning. Assessing students before you begin instructions helps the teacher identify where the students are on a learning spectrum. Assessing students before and during instruction helps with identifying if a lesson you wanted to take 2 weeks on, will actually take 2 weeks or less. When you find out what students already know you will be able to see what areas you need to work harder at, and some areas where the students are proficient. There is a form of assessments teachers will use called, Formative Assessments.
Formative Assessment Formative assessment according to Popham is, “… a planned process in which assessment-elicited evidence of students’ status is used by teacher to adjust their ongoing instructional procedures or by students to adjust their current learning tactics.” (Popham, 1995, p. 290) Popham wants readers to understand that formative-assessment is a process and not a test. While you use this method to understand students learning abilities, you also use it to progress your students in their learning.
